About Safebite
Safebite is a food allergy app that filters restaurant menus by your allergens, so finding somewhere safe to eat takes seconds instead of a stack of PDFs and phone calls.
What Safebite does
You choose the allergens you avoid, for yourself or for your child. Safebite then shows nearby restaurants and, for each one, which menu items are free of every allergen on your list. It tracks ten allergens: peanut, tree nut, milk, egg, wheat/gluten, soy, fish, crustacean shellfish, mollusk shellfish and sesame.
Where the menu information comes from
- Local restaurants publish their own menus on Safebite and mark the allergens in each item themselves.
- National chains are added from the allergen information each chain publishes for its menu, such as its online allergen chart or nutrition and allergen guide.
Menus can change faster than any app. That’s why Safebite treats every “may contain” warning as unsafe, and why we always recommend confirming your allergies with restaurant staff before you order.
How our guides are written
Our guides cover the practical side of eating out with food allergies: choosing restaurants, asking the right questions, and avoiding cross-contact. We base them on guidance from organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and we link to those sources in every guide. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed.
The guides are general information, not medical advice. Your allergist is the right person to tell you what is safe for you.
